DANIEL’S 70TH WEEK
This is perhaps the most striking and specific information given in the Bible to tell us when the world will end and the events that will lead to it. Again, in this prophecy God used Israel as the clock of the world.
The Bible records that 70 weeks of years has been allotted to Israel (the world, since the latter part of the prophecy – the shedding of the blood of Jesus and the millennial reign of Christ on earth cannot be limited to Israel alone) within which God would end sin by making a reconciliation through the ministry of Jesus, and thereafter bring in everlasting righteousness. The period from the time Ezra and Nehemiah came from Babylonian exile with the decree to start rebuilding Jerusalem and its walls which were destroyed by the Babylonians, to the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ was 69 weeks (Dan. 9:25). With the death of Jesus, time became suspended. The suspended time before the beginning of the remaining one week is the time given for the Gentiles to be saved (Is. 56:1-9; Rm. 11:25). The time of the Gentiles was completed (fulfilled) in 1967 when the Jews reclaimed Jerusalem from the Arabs in 1967, and right now we are in a transition period waiting for the antichrist to be revealed. When he is revealed, anybody can say for certain that this world has exactly 7 years to the end, the battle Armageddon (the Third World War), the cleansing of the earth and the beginning of the millennium (Dan. 9:27; 2 Thess. 2:3-4). To complete our understanding, God Who does not want His Children to be in the dark concerning His plans (Is. 45:19) has given a major way by which the antichrist can be identified – The person that brings peace to this world and Middle East and solves the world’s economic problems is the antichrist (Dan. 8:23; 1 Thess. 5:3).
And the events happening in the world today, especially in Europe, tells us that revelation of who the antichrist is, is just around the corner. Nearly 2,500 years ago, while rebuking the irreverent King Nebuchadnezzar, God began to show the course of future event and rulership in the world. This was the great image made up of different elements. (Dan. 2:31-35) – which accurately describes the different kingdoms and rulers that will rule the world from the Babylonian Empire (the head of gold), the Medo-Persian Empire (the breast and the arms of silver), the Greecian Empire (the thigh of brass), to the Roman Empire which started with the legs of iron and at the end had ten toes of different material characters (iron and clay) fusing together. The identities of the nations that make up the ten toes were later revealed in Rev. 13:1-5 and Dan. 7:1-8 as the countries whose geographical boundaries have evolved with the boundaries represented by the different elements (world powers), and who at the end of time will form a political union.
The E.E.C. nations constitute the iron in the ten toes, while the sweeping changes in the clay countries – the COMECON countries (Eastern Europe and Russia) will bring about the political basis for the unity of these erstwhile Communist countries with E.E.C. countries. This is going to be the revived Roman Empire (which broke into world nations with the fall of the old Roman Empire).
When the Communist countries have seemingly embraced capitalist precepts, the capital they need for the development of their battered economies will then flow from the Western countries. This ‘world economic recovery’ is however attributed in the Bible to the policies of the antichrist: “And in the latter time of their kingdom (after the four world powers have ruled), when the transgressors have come to the full (when iniquity abounds like it does today – 2 Tim. 3:1-5), ‘a king of fierce countenance and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.’” (Dan. 8:23-25)
